Farmers demand compensation for neck blast damaged paddy

Damak, May 25: The farmers of Kamal Rural Municipality Ward-2 of Jhapa have demanded compensation after they lost their paddy crops to neck blast diseases.
The neck blast disease in paddy infects the neck of the rice panicle during the rice-forming stage.
According to farmers, they found the paddy was destroyed owing to the neck blast disease within a day.
A preliminary report showed that the paddy planted around 50 bighas of land Ward-2 of Kamal Rural Municipality was damaged and the infection is feared to spread in other areas. The information regarding the spread is trickling in from other parts, said Prem Pokharel, technician of Agriculture Division.
He said that they have appealed the Agriculture Gyan Centre and State Government for identifying and treatment of diseases.
Deputy Chief of Rural Municipality Benu Prasad Siwakoti said that the monitoring team of technicians found that neck blast diseases has affected the paddy crops.
“The diseases badly affected the paddy and due to it the farmers needn’t cut down the crops. But we have to identify what is the reason that created the problems,” Siwakoti said.
He said that the problem was seen in the paddy seeds distributed by a local Sagarmatha Krishak Samuha. She said that they had directed it to stop the distribution of seeds.
