Kathmandu and Nanjing metropolis of China establish sisterly relations

Kathmandu, June 26: Kathmandu Metropolis and Nanjing Metropolis of China have established sisterly relations.

A Memorandum of Understanding to this effect was signed and exchanged between Kathmandu Metropolis deputy Mayor Hari Prabha Khadgi Shrestha and Chairman of the standing committee of Nanjing municipal People's Congress on Nanjing Culture and Tourism, Long Xiang, amidst a special function here on Wednesday.

With Nanjing, Kathmandu now has sisterly relations with four Chinese metropolis including Chengdu, Lhasa and Xian.

Addressing the 'Promotion event of Nanjing Culture and Tourism' in which the MoU was signed, Kathmandu metropolis deputy Mayor Khadgi expressed happiness and viewed that the new relation would also promote people-to-people relations, arts and heritage between the two cities in addition to cooperation in culture, tourism and education.

"Both the cities are cultural and historical cities, and the relations between the two cities would add vitality to their tourism as well," Khadgi said.

Capital of Jinagsu province of China, Nanjing has a history of more than 2,500 years.

Chairman of the standing committee of Nanjing municipal People's Congress on Nanjing Culture and Tourism, Long Xiang, said that Nanjing was an innovative city with modernity and vitality. "As Kathmandu, Nanjing is full of historic monuments and it is one of the ancient Chinese capitals."

Zhang Bin, director general of the management committee of Niushoushan Cultural Tourism Zone, said that Niushoushan, a mountain near Nanjing, is dedicated to Shakyamuni Buddha. "Buddhism was originated from Nepal, Chinese Buddhism was originated from Niushoushan or Niushou mountain. Therefore, visiting Nanjing is like visiting birthplace of Chinese Buddhism. We have Buddhist usnisa relic enshrined in Nanjing Niushoushan cultural tourism area."  

Chief of cultural section of the Chinese embassy in Kathmandu, Ci Dan Bai Mu, and spokesperson of Nepal Tourism Board, Aditya Baral, also spoke on occasion highlighting the cultural as well as tourism relations between the neighbours.

On the occasion, Nanjing Little Red Flower Art Troupe showcased some nine cultural performances including dance, songs and music.
