National Paddy Day marked with various events
Kathmandu, June.30: Farmers across the country observed the 16th National Paddy Day on Sunday, organsing various programmes, including paddy seedling plantation, and paddy planters making merry in the field by throwing mud and water on each other.
The Nepali farmers observe Asar 15th of the Nepali calendar as the paddy plantation day.
The theme of the 16th National Rice Day is "Technology and Mechanisation on Paddy Production, Control on Rice Import'.
Asar 15 is also known as the day of the curd-and-beaten rice feast.
The Central Level Rice Day and Paddy Plantation Festival 2076 was marked at Rajpur Municipality of Bardiya organising cultural programmes on Sunday.
Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development Chakra Pani Khanal, Director General of Department of Agriculture Surya Prasad Poudel, Director General of Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC) Tek Bahadur Gurung and government officials attended the programme in Bardiya.
Likewise, the Nepal Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) marked the paddy plantation day organising the programme at Khumaltar.
At the programme of Bardiya, Minister Khanal stressed on the need of mechanisation on agriculture for increasing the production of paddy and other agricultural crops, said Surya Prasad Poudel, director general of Department of Agriculture.
Minister Khanal said that the government would focus on the value-chain on hybrid paddy from the seeds to grow seedlings to harvest paddy through machines.
Stating that the farmers are facing a shortage of chemical fertilisers during the plantation season, he said that the government would construct depots in various places for availability of chemical fertilisers.
Due to late and weak monsoon, the plantation has been completed in around 11 per cent till the date while it was completed more than 18 per cent last year, Poudel said.
Farmers of many places are now preparing to sow seeds to grow seedlings at a time when they should have been busy planting paddy, he said, adding that the production will not affect significantly if we planted paddy in more paddy field by second week of Shrawan.
Meanwhile, the 16th paddy day was celebrated at Baniyani of Kachankwal rural municipality- paddy super zone of Jhapa by planting paddy seedling with the modern technology on Sunday.
The programme was inaugurated by planting paddy through the drum seeder and rice transplant in the paddy super zone of Jhapa.
State Assembly Member Basanta Baniya has planted paddy seedling sitting over the Rice Transplant Machine.
He said that it was a must to increase the paddy production through the use of technology and mechanization in agriculture.
Farmers of the area observed plantation using the modern technology encouraging.
Senior Agriculture Development Officer of Prime Minister Agriculture Modernization Project Implementation Unit Dhan Bahadur Thapa said that there will be high possibilities for paddy plantation three times in the district even it was planted twice a day.
The productivity of per hectare of land of Jhapa stood at 3,863 kilograms.
Similarly, National Paddy Day was celebrated in different places of Rupandehi district organising various programmes.
