Gurkha Monument unveiled in Belgian city of Ieper
Kathmandu, July 19: A Gurkha Monument constructed on behalf of the Nepal Government and Nepalis in Ieper city of Belgium was unveiled recently.
According to a press note of Embassy of Nepal in Belgium, Nepal’s Ambassador to Belgium Rammani Pokharel and Acting Mayor of Ieper Municipality Jef Verschoore jointly unveiled the monument on July 16 that was built in memory of the Gurkha soldiers.
The 2.5ft tall Gurkha monument was prepared by Nepali artist Pancharatna Dangol, the Embassy of Nepal said.
The monument was erected with coordination of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) for commemoration and honour of the Gurkha soldiers killed in the Ieper battlefield in the First World War.
The Embassy of Nepal is organising different programmes to mark the 50-year of diplomatic ties between Nepal and Belgium.
Officials of Ieper Municipality, British Ambassador to Belgium Mrs. Elison Rose, West Europe Director of CWGC Mr. Richard Nichol, Chairman of Ypres Veterans Association Mr René Declercq, Commander of Belgian Air Force Filip Borremans, Military Commander of West Flanders Province of Belgium Lt Col Christophe Onraet, officials of Embassy of Nepal, members of diplomatic bodies, members of different social organisations of Nepalis based in Belgium and others were present in the monument unveiling ceremony.
On the occasion, Ambassador Pokharel thanked the Ieper Municipality for providing space to construct the monument and the CWGC for its coordination and support. He also expressed hope that the relations at the peoples’ level between the two countries would further strengthen in the future.
Likewise, Acting Mayor Verschoore also expressed gratitude to the Embassy of Nepal. He also said that he was deeply saddened by the heavy loss of human lives and physical property caused by the ‘Gorkha Earthquake’ and extended goodwill and sympathy to Nepali community. RSS
